Villagers in Guangdong Province said they would fight for their land. Thousands from Wanggang village protested outside a government building in the provincial capital Guangzhou on Tuesday. They've accused the local Communist Party secretary in Wanggang village of seizing land worth more than $63 million, without giving any compensation to the villagers. And they got an unusually fast response from authorities in Guangzhou. On Wednesday, they promised an investigation into the villagers' grievances. That quick response could be because villagers had threatened to turn their protest into a "second Wukan." They were referring to a week-long standoff between villagers and officials in nearby Wukan village, also over land seizures by local Communist Party officials.Wukan made headlines after villagers kicked out local police and Party leaders after one villager was allegedly beaten to death in police custody. The situation was eventually resolved when provincial officials stepped in and agreed to meet villagers' demands.
