Tourism has now resumed along the Mekong River in Yunnan Province. Tourist trips were put on hold after passenger ferries were robbed in August, and more than a dozen Chinese sailors killed in an attack in October. The Mekong River begins in China, and runs along the border of several Southeast Asian countries.

The tourist line along the Mekong River from China to Thailand was resumed on Tuesday. It opened four months after the security situation along the river deteriorated in August last year.

Last year the passenger ferries along the Mekong River were all suspended after some tourists were robbed in August, and 13 Chinese sailors were killed in October.

The Chinese tourist ship Golden Triangle 2 set sail at Jinghong Port in China's Yunnan Province and sailed along the river to its destination port of Chiang Saen in Thailand.

Fourteen Australian tourists were onboard the ship.

[Allan, Tourist]:
"I've heard of the pirates on the river, but as I understand it, they were traveling in a vessel which was traveling much more slowly, and the vessel we are in will travel very quickly. I don't think the pirates will be a problem for us."

The captain of the ship was not as optimistic as his passengers.

[Zhu Bing, Captain of Golden Triangle 2]:
"I still feel worried because the robbery and the attack happened not long ago and I am worried about the situation. I have to go, because this is an international line, and I have no choice."

Cargo transport has been gradually restored after the start of a joint armed patrol in December 2011, by China, Thailand, Laos and Burma.
