Winds of more than 100 kilometres per hour hit Germany's North Sea coast, forcing the closure of train service between the mainland and the popular holiday island of Sylt.
In Dagebuell, waves flooded the pier.
And in the port city of Hamburg, strong winds knocked down several trees.
German weather forecasters predict ever stronger winds on Thursday, this time in the country's south around the Black Forest region, with snow expected about an altitude of 500 metres.
