Activists say at least 10 people died in some of the largest protests in the nine-month uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The anti-regime activists say hundreds of thousands of protesters crowded the streets to show Arab League monitors the level of popular dissent.
Arab League observers arrived in Syria this week to assess whether Assad's regime has withdrawn the army from cities where more than 5,000 people have been killed since March. Syria says it is fighting Islamist militants who have killed more than 2,000 of its security forces.
The monitoring teams have encountered random gunfire and hostility when they turn up under army escort.
