China's Foreign Ministry denounced a ruling by the European Court of Justice last week. The court had upheld a law that will mean strict new carbon taxes for flights operating in Europe.

On Wednesday, the European Court of Justice ruled against a group of US-based airlines. The airlines had challenged a European law that requires a carbon cap on all airlines that fly to and from airports in the EU. Airlines will have to purchase permits for carbon use starting on January 1.

Chinese authorities disapprove of the law, which will affect Chinese airlines operating in Europe.

[Liu Weimin, Foreign Ministry Spokesman]:
"We are against the move made by Europe to implement the legislation forcefully and unilaterally and we have clarified China's stance and concerns with Europe through bilateral channels."

Earlier this month the China Air Transport Association urged China's airlines to refuse to take part in the emissions scheme and not to submit CO2 monitoring plans to EU officials.

Chinese authorities have also called the new carbon law a "green barrier," and warned that it could spark a trade war, though they did not specify of what sort.
