New York is getting ready for its legendary Times Square New Year's Eve celebration, with the 6-foot high "number 2" arriving to spell out 2012. Lets go and join the fun.
The numeral "2" was the star of the show in Times Square on Wednesday as New York readies for the ball drop to ring in the New Year.
The 6-foot number was delivered by flatbed truck to the Times Square Visitors Center.
On December 27th it will make its way to the roof of number 1 Times Square, where it will sit at the base of the flagpole for the 2012 New Year's Eve celebration.
Delivering the number or numbers required for the sign is an annual event put on by the Times Square Alliance, the organization responsible for New Year's Eve festivities in Times Square.
Organizers staged a practice countdown and the 6-foot tall number lit up in the building's lobby.
Tim Tompkins of the Times Square Alliance said he expects a huge crowd and lots of excitement for this year's New Year's Eve countdown.
[Tim Tompkins, Times Square Alliance, President]:
"We're looking forward to unbelievable crowds for New Year's Eve this year. Also there's some major, major talent this year. There's Lady Gaga, there's Justin Bieber and so we expect a significant drop in the average age of the participants and the viewers of New Year's Eve this year."
The popularity of this year's hit movie "New Year's Eve" starring Halle Berry, Hillary Swank, Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro, is also expected to help inspire huge attendance.
This year the numerals are getting a green makeover with the installation of LED bulbs to satisfy a rule that requires the use of energy efficient technology.
Times Square has hosted New York's New Year's Eve celebration since 1904.
