STORY: Mexico's Navy have seized a warehouse full of chemicals that experts say could have been used to make millions of dollars worth of methamphetamine.
More than 200 tonnes of the illicit chemicals were found in a warehouse in the port city of Lazaro Cardenas in the drug-ravaged southern state of Michoacan following an intelligence operation between the attorney general's office and the finance ministry.
Authorities believed the seized goods originated from China and en route to Guatemala, were used by cartels to manufacture meth, a stimulant that is smuggled across the U.S. border and sold in crystal or powder form.
Meth, which can cause brain damage and violent behavior, is a law enforcement priority in the United States, where the drug has ravaged many rural communities and forced production across the border.
The home state of Mexico's embattled President Felipe Calderon, Michoacan, has become the country's methamphetamine-producing heartland and seen a dizzying increase in violence amongst feuding cartels that has displaced thousands.
Nationally more than 45,000 have been killed in Mexico's army-led crackdown on trafficking.
