A retired Australian soldier was kidnapped in a southern Philippine island on Monday.
Warren Richard Rodwell was taken at gunpoint from his house in Ipil town, by at least six men.
They then made their getaway by speedboat.
Security officials suspect that Islamist militants from the Abu Sayyaf group are behind the abduction.
Police said blood-stained beach footwear were found near Rodwell's front door, indicating a struggle. A pistol was also found inside the house.
Rodwell has been living in Zamboanga Sibugay province for six months, where Islamist militants and criminal gangs operate.
The Abu Sayyaf group has in the past kidnapped several foreigners in the restive region of Mindanao.
