EU Parliament Calls for Action on Human Rights Violations in Tibet

The European Parliament held a conference on Tuesday on the human rights violations in Tibet. The EU says more action is needed to help resolve the situation. Here’s more from our correspondents in Brussels.

On Tuesday 29th of November, the European Parliament in Brussels held a conference about the situation in Tibet.

The conference was attended by several MEPs, Human Rights organizations and experts, who addressed the serious Human Rights violations happening in Tibet and the continuing of self-immolations.

The Prime Minister of the India-based Central Tibetan Administration came for the first time to Brussels.

[Lobsang Sangay, Kalon Tripa, Central Tibetan Administration]:
“It is not just 1 but 12 cases of self-immolation. So that is why I visited the US and now I am visiting European countries to urge these governments to issue statements and support of Tibetan people who are dying, so that these kinds of statements will send a message of hope to Tibetans inside Tibet.”

The U.S. State Department and the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, have issued statements, as have some of the European countries.

[Lobsang Sangay, Kalon Tripa, Central Tibetan Administration]:
“Obviously and ultimately, the blame goes to the Chinese government and their repressive policies. We have to address that. The hard-line policies of the Chinese government are to end. And review and relook at the issue of Tibet. And find a moderate way, a peaceful way, a non-violent way of dealing with it.”

The President of the Tibet Intergroup in the European Parliament, and Co-Chair of the International Network of Parliamentarians on Tibet says.
