The US Commerce Department started investigating the trade practices of Chinese solar panel companies earlier this month.

SolarWorld Industries and other American solar panel makers had accused Chinese manufacturers of selling solar panels below cost in the US, with the help of illegal subsidies from the Chinese government.

Now Chinese solar panel companies are saying their success in the US market comes down to their own competitive advantages. And the Chinese regime has announced its own retaliatory investigation into US government subsidies of renewable energy.

But despite the controversy, Chinese firms say they don't want to start a trade war with the US. And US Ambassador to China Gary Locke says the investigations only affect a few percentage points of trade.

US solar panel imports from China rose to $1.5 billion last year, up from $640 million in 2009.
