They arrived under a veil of fog and darkness... 11 flatbed trucks with containers of highly active nuclear waste pull into a containment facility in northern Germany Monday night.
With a police escort 1000 officers strong, the convoy reached its final destination after days of rail travel from it's origin-- a reprocessing center in northern France.
Sometimes violent demonstrations interrupted the transport along the way... French and German anti nuclear protesters staged sit-ins and roadblocks that were successful in slowing the movement.
Still, the material arrived. The waste itself, produced in German reactors years ago, had been sent to France for reprocessing, and will be stored back in Germany.
German government officials decided to close all nuclear power plants by 2020-- this after the fallout from the Fukushima nuclear plants in Japan that were badly damaged in a massive earthquake and tsunami in March.
