James Murdoch is under fire for a phone hacking scandal that tarnished his media company. A British MP went so far as to compare Murdoch to a mafia boss during a grilling by lawmakers over phone hacking.

On Thursday News Corp executive James Murdoch told UK members of parliament that he cannot rule out closing the Sun newspaper.

Murdoch appeared confident under interrogation by lawmakers even when compared by MP Tom Watson to a Mafia boss.

[Tom Watson, Labour MP]:
"Mr. Murdoch, you must be the first mafia boss in history who didn't know he was running a criminal enterprise."

Murdoch said that staff within his company had ordered private investigators to follow and investigate members of the parliamentary committee investigating the phone hacking scandal.

The company had previously admitted carrying out surveillance on public figures and lawyers representing victims in hacking cases.

[James Murdoch, News Corp Executive]:
"I am aware of the case of surveilling Mr. Watson. Again, I think, under the circumstances I apologize unreservedly for that, it is not something that I would condone, it's not something that I had knowledge of and it's not something that I think has a place in the way that we operate."

Watson has been one of the most vocal critics of News Corp in the phone hacking scandal.

James Murdoch was brought into News International after the date of the last known phone hacking, but has been accused of failing to ask the right questions at least, and possibly of participating in a huge corporate cover-up.
