An earthquake takes residents by surprise in China's northwest Xinjiang region. The 6.0 magnitude earthquake has reportedly caused "severe damage", but no deaths have been reported at this time.

An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale jolted northwest China's Xinjiang region on Tuesday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center. The quake struck the border area of Yining County and Tokkuztara County.

So far, no casualties have been reported.

The China Earthquake Administration estimates that the quake may have caused severe damage, and people in the nearby counties could feel strong shaking.

[Mu Fengrong, Xinjiang Resident]:
"We were getting up when the earth shook. Our house shook violently. I immediately jumped up and, holding my daughter and son, rushed out. Our sheep had gathered together and were circling around the sheepfold, and our dog howled for a while."

And it wasn’t just Xinjiang that had an earthquake… another one measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale hit the border area of Sichuan and Gansu provinces in western China on Tuesday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center. No casualties have been reported.
