A road accident in northwest China on Saturday left 23 people dead and 5 others seriously injured. The accident occurred in a partially completed tunnel in Gansu Province.

Twenty-three people have died and five have been hospitalized after a road accident in northwest China's Gansu Province on Saturday morning.

A dual-purpose vehicle carrying railway builders to their construction site crashed into the side of a mountain tunnel and overturned.

Twenty-one passengers died on the spot and two others died later in hospital. The remaining five are in a critical condition in the Dingxi People's Hospital.

The accident occurred in a mountain tunnel in Manwa Township, Lintao County. The tunnel was under construction as part of a railway.

An initial investigation indicates that brake failure caused the accident, according to the local railway authorities.
