US Congresswoman Urges S. Korea Not to Deport Falun Gong

We have been reporting on the case of Mr. Jin Jingze, a Chinese Falun Gong practitioner seeking political asylum in South Korea. The Korean government currently has Mr. Jin in detention, ready to be sent back to China where he will face almost certain persecution for his belief in the spiritual practice. The office of US Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen recently released a letter she presented to South Korean President Lee Myung-bak when he visited Washington on October 13th. In the letter, Ros-Lehtinen calls on the South Korean government to honor its commitment to the United Nations Convention on Refugees.
This is a letter from US Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. It’s addressed to the South Korean President Lee Myung-bak on his trip to Washington, DC on October 13th. The letter calls on Lee and the South Korean government not to deport Falun Gong practitioners back to China.
Falun Gong practitioners like Mr. Jin Jingzhe. Jin was a detained by Korean authorities on September 5th and is currently awaiting deportation back to China. Since 2009, South Korea has deported 10 Falun Gong practitioners and denied asylum to about 40 more.
In the letter, Ros-Lehtinen writes:
“The advocacy of your government against the forced repatriation of North Korean refugees, due to their clear fear of persecution, however, stands in marked contrast to Seoul’s current policy of forcibly returning Falun Gong practitioners to China, despite their own equally documented fear of persecution by Beijing.”
The Chinese regime has been persecuting members of the Falun Gong spiritual discipline since 1999. Numerous cases of torture have been documented by human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch...
