How to Choose a Sewing Machine - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. One of the biggest things is how much are you going to be sewing? Are you going to commit to a lot of different garments throughout the next year, throughout the next 5 years? If you are then you want to really invest in a machine. Now if you are just going to play around and you are just going to kind of like mess with things here and there then by all means go with the little bit less expensive machine and that will work out for you. Really the only difference between price points with machines, with a few exceptions is going to be the amount of ease in sewing and the engineering behind it. So, think about how much you are going to be sewing and then buy a machine that is going to be appropriate for that amount. Essentially you have got two kinds of sewing machines when you go to buy one. You have an industrial like I am working on now, they tend to have stronger motors and their built into tables. And then you have what most people when they start sewing are going to get, and that is a basic home machine. Home machines tend to be a little bit more portable and they tend to be just a little less powerful. Now you can buy a good one that has a little bit more power to the motor, but for the most part of the general rule is home sewing machines are not quite as tough, their not as durable as an industrial machine.
