Childproofing My Home - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. When a baby gets mobile you really start to understand and notice that things around your house might be kind of hazardous. So a few tips about baby-proofing your home: One, you just get on the floor and you start crawling around and you look for what is under the couches, where are there plugs, where are there cords, and you start to really put yourself in the baby’s shoes and notice what might be dangerous. Another is to really notice that, where are the cords? If there are things plugged in, can they be moved? If the outlets are not covered, you might want to get covers for them; if you have blinds, you are going to want to tie up the cords, so that it is not a hazard to the child; and then you want to be careful and make sure that if you have a bookshelf, that you have secured it to the wall, so that if your child is playing because what children love to do, especially when they get mobile, is they want to start pulling things off shelves; and so you really want to either get rid of the books on that level of the babies, if you do not want them pulling the books off, and you definitely want to make sure that the bookshelf is secure. And then lastly, you are going to want to really make sure that any electronic equipment that you are concerned about is hidden behind doors or moved to a higher level, because the one thing that I do know about little children is that anything with lights and buttons is really appealing, and it is really hard for a child to not touch those things. So it is better for you to create the environment that is safe and minimizes the amount of no’s that you have to say, than to constantly be trying to make sure your child’s not playing with things you do not want them to play with.
