A Brief History of Paxil, an SSRI Antidepressant
Paxil is made and sold by GlaxoSmithKline, Paroxetine is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and anxiety disorders. Paroxetine was approved as Paxil in 1992 by the US FDA. In 2006, doctors issued 19.7 million Paxil prescriptions. Paxil is a potent member of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class of antidepressants. SSRIs prevent receptors in the human brain from absorbing serotonin that has already been released. Serotonin helps maintain feelings of well being, so preventing re-absorption alleviates negative feelings. Although Paxil is a very popular drug, researchers are currently trying to determine whether Paxil has caused birth defects in children born to mothers who were taking the drug while pregnant.
