And now what looks like a coordinated jail break in Mexico on Monday, as 32 inmates break out of three different prisons in Veracruz, Mexico. According to government sources, 14 have been recaptured, but the rest remain at large.
Thirty-two prisoners escaped simultaneously from three different jails in the eastern state of Veracruz on Monday. The latest prison break underscores the challenges Mexico faces as it battles powerful drug cartels.
[Gerardo Buganza, Veracruz Government Secretary]:
"With regards to La Toma prison in Amatlan de los Reyes, 16 prisoners escaped and according to the guards, they were overpowered by the inmates who forced them to open the doors. The same thing happened at the Dupont Ostion jail in Coatzacoalcos where 12 inmates escaped. In Cosamaloapan, four inmates escaped from the jail. I would like to inform you that thanks to a coordinated effort by state and federal authorities, 14 fugitives have been recaptured."
In La Toma prison in Amatlan de Los Reyes, many of the escaped prisoners were believed to be serving sentences for drug trafficking.
Authorities say Mexican troops are searching for the missing fugitives and that the guards at the three jails would be investigated for the breaches in security.
The escape follows a string of breaches across northern Mexico.
In December last year, more than 140 inmates escaped from a prison in Nuevo Laredo on the U.S. border.
In September last year, 85 prisoners escaped from a prison in the city of Reynosa.
President Calderon, who sent thousands of troops across the country to fight drug gangs, has vowed to clean up prisons that in the past have allowed drug lords to live in luxury or escape when they please.
But the conservative leader has struggled to contain corruption and lawlessness in the prison system...
