Chinese human rights activist Guo Feixiong was recently released from prison. He had been sentenced for "illegal business activity" after he had helped remove a corrupt village official. Guo was tortured during his five years behind bars. He talked with us about his experience.

A Chinese human rights activist Guo Feixiong was released from prison on Tuesday. Before he was imprisoned, he had worked at Beijing's Zhisheng Law Firm.

In 2005 Guo helped villagers in Taishi village, Guangdong Province remove their corrupt village chief. The following year he was detained and given a five-year prison sentence for so-called "illegal business activity."

Once released, Guo spoke to NTD thanking those who had campaigned for him.

"When someone lives for his belief, no matter what happens, in his heart he is still happy. To all those who paid attention to my case, who used all sorts of methods to call for my release, and also my family members and friends, I would like to express my most sincere thanks."

Guo's wife told rights organization Human Rights in China that the prosecution lacked evidence, so authorities used torture to extract a confession from Guo. He was tortured with electric shocks and deprived of sleep.

Despite what he suffered, Guo says it won't change his belief in human rights.

"I will not, because of what happened to me in the past five years, become more extreme or become a coward. My belief has not changed in the last several decades."

Guo says he will remain in Guangzhou, but lawyers who have paid attention to his case say he needs to be careful.
