Hong Kong's Democratic Party has pledged their support for a lawsuit launched against Hong Kong's police chief by one of our own NTD interns. Cai Wenwen says she was illegally detained when covering protests after Hong Kong's democracy parade in July. Democratic Party Chairman Albert Ho spoke alongside Cai Wenwen, displaying evidence of her arrest.

Hong Kong's Democratic Party held a press conference on Thursday to support a lawsuit launched by NTD intern Cai Wenwen against Hong Kong's police chief. It's the first case of a journalist suing the police chief in Hong Kong.

On the evening of July 1st, Cai Peiwen was covering the aftermath of the annual democracy parade as a photographer—her first assignment for NTD in Hong Kong. When police surrounded a group of protestors, she was apparently mistaken for a protestor and detained along with them. Although NTD faxed through proof of her identity as a journalist, she wasn't released until the morning. Police also took her fingerprints.

Democratic Party chairman Albert Ho says the detention was an attack on freedom of speech in Hong Kong.

[Albert Ho, Chairman, HK Democratic Party]:
"News reporters should not be subject to irrational and illegal intervention and suppression. This is a right and freedom. If we didn't have the freedom to do interviews, fundamental freedom of speech, you could say half of our right to express freedom has been snatched away."

Cai Wenwen wants to ensure other journalists don't encounter the same situation in the future.

[Cai Wenwen, NTD Intern]:
"That day I was serving as a photographer at the protest site and was detained. Some say others in our profession may meet with the same unfortunate situation. I feel this kind of thing should not be accepted in Hong Kong."
