Designer boutiques and jewelry stores vie for buyers in Cyrillic script and the main language heard among the crowds thronging the promenade is Russian. Locals fear their scenic resort town has sold out.Russians have certainly invested heavily in Karlovy Vary, buying up hotels and houses and spending even more on lavish renovations. That the town has returned to its former glory is largely their doing. But locals are suspicious of Russian financing, and say the Russian mafia is also moving in. So while the Russians are unpopular in Karlovy Vary, their money is more than welcome.
