The forerunner of today's palace was built in the 16th century, but was destroyed in 1689. It was restored, but then was damaged in a fire less than fifty years later and had to be restored again. Finally, the Gottesaue Palace was leveled during World War Two and was not restored until 1978. Now, once more at peace, the palace enjoys a serene existence as a German music academy.
