Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa (pronounced: ma-HIN-dah rag-a-PAC-sa) met with Chinese premier Wen Jiabao in Beijing on Thursday.

Rajapaksa says his visit is to expand economic ties with the Chinese regime—already Sri Lanka's largest bilateral donor.

But human rights groups are saying the real purpose of the meeting is for Sri Lanka to seek the Chinese regime's support in blocking an investigation into allegations of war crimes.

A report by the U.N. found credible evidence that thousands of civilians were killed in the civil war between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tigers.

Given the regime's history of opposing foreign intervention in domestic conflicts, many expect the Chinese regime will probably support Sri Lanka.
