China's foreign minister, Yang Jiechi, made a diplomatic visit to Sudan and South Sudan earlier this week. It comes one month after the South became an independent state.

For years, the CCP supported Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, despite international claims that he committed war crimes in Darfur.

Sudan had been the sixth-largest source of oil imports to China. Now, three-quarters of that oil belongs to the recently independent South.

The CCP is seeking to build relationships with both countries now. Foreign minister Yang Jiechi pledged to help South Sudan with development. And separately, he announced China would give Sudan a 15 million-dollar interest-free loan.
