August 1st commemorates the founding of the Chinese Communist Party's military, the People's Liberation Army. While official ceremonies were held this week to honor the military, some veterans say the communist regime has left them out in the cold.

The Chinese regime marked the 84th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army on Monday, August 1st. The day, designated as China's Army Day, is meant to acknowledge the contributions of the PLA. But for years, many former military officers have been saying since retirement, they've been left to fend for themselves with little welfare.

Around 200 veterans in eastern Hubei province commemorated China's Army Day by appealing at a local government office. The men, who are now ordinary workers, say they've been abandoned by the Chinese regime.

[Cai Xuewen, Retired Military Officer]
"I was in service for 27 years and received many commendations. In the end I was kicked to side. Now we have nowhere to air our grievances, I don't even have a penny's pay. No one looks after my health. If we petition, they'll just ignore you."

In China, military officers can be transferred to civilian positions under the cadre retirement policy. They're often reassigned as ordinary employees. While the Chinese regime promises to look after them, many end up losing their veteran's benefits.

[Mr Qu, Retired Military Officer]
"When we're transferred to enterprises, our cadre status given by the county is taken away. Our blood is worth more than sweat. Compared to regular public servants, military officers should receive higher compensation. But instead they're paid more than us. We feel this is very unfair."
