Cervical Pathology Ossified Posterior Longitudinal Ligament expert witness testimony multimedia, The posterior longitudinal ligament runs along the rear side of the vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs, in front of the spinal cord, from the skull to the pelvis. It is widest at the level of the discs and narrowest at the middle of the vertebra. It connects adjacent vertebra and intervertebral discs and assists in stabilizing the spine. See the expert witness testimony multimedia. Thickening and calcification of parts of the posterior longitudinal ligament can occur, converting them from thin, flexible ligaments to thickened, bony masses. This disease is called ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament, or OPLL. It leads to compression of the spinal cord and nerve roots next to the ligament.
