Villa Balbianello is located in Lenno's village, one of the most picturesque places of the peninsula called Dosso of Lavedo or Balbianello protruding Lake Como and covered by a huge park. Immersed in the park there is a charming villa, which was built by Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini in 1787 instead of an old Franciscan monastery. Over time, the building has undergone several changes: in 1796, when the Cardinal died, was purchased by Joseph Visconti Arconati who improved the lodge and the garden, in the Nineteenth century became a property of Lamertenghi Porro, then fell into disuse until 1974 when the explorer Guido Monzino filled it with relics found on his expeditions. Since 1888 Villa Balbianello is owned by FAI, the Italian Environmental Fund, today the outside is characterized by two residential buildings, an arcade, a church and a marina, while inside you can see the "Shipments Museum " where you can enjoy Guido Monzino memory trips. What distinguishes Villa Balbianello is that it has always been the historic villa on Lake Como most beloved by Italian and international film producers so that here, especially in the beautiful terraced garden, they set many of their masterpieces. In fact, the Villa has hosted the second episode of the science fiction film par excellence, Star Wars: George Lucas has chosen this wonderful place as a background for the kiss between Anankin and Princess Padmè; but also famous James Bond has been here in the movie Casino Royale when agent 007, interpreted by Daniel Craig, spent a period of time here convalescing after being wounded. Among the other directors who have chosen Villa Balbianello there are Mario Soldati, who in 1941 produced Piccolo Mondo Antico, Mario Orfini, in 1992, with Jackpot reconstructs in the villa the residence of a billionaire obsessed with eternal youth, Christian-Jacque, who in 1947 turned La Certosa di Parma film based on the novel by Stendhal, and John Irvin with a Un mese al lago.
