In Peru violent demonstrations have claimed the lives of at least five people. It happened in the south of the country as about a thousand protesters broke down the perimeter fence at the airport at Juliaca. Their anger is over a mining contract given to a Canadian corporation which raised concerns about contamination of the local drinking water. The government has since cancelled the project.
