A suspected chemical spill in eastern China has left thousands of people without water, state media said on Wednesday.

A factory in Zhejiang is suspected of dumping toxic chemicals, including benzene and alkene, in the Tiaoxi River. Two water treatment plants have shut down due to the spill and more than 100 companies have closed, Xinhua news agency reported.

Last week China's Environment Ministry said that one in six of China's major rivers are too polluted to use, even for farmland.
