The healthcare in Myanmar's eastern ethnic regions is so bad that most people are dependent on help from across the border in Thailand. The sick often trek for days through landmine-infested jungle to reach medical clinics over the frontier. The only other hope for many is to wait for one of the Thailand-based teams of backpack medics. These health workers risk their own lives by crossing into Myanmar and travelling village-to-village offering assistance to those caught up in the military's counter-insurgency campaign.
