Responding the public anger—and subsequent Chinese crackdown—in Inner Mongolia, more than 70 protesters staged a demonstration in front of the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo on Monday. Japanese and ethnic Mongolians joined together in their protest.

It comes after two ethnic Mongolians were killed in the Chinese region, in separate incidents—both related to protecting the environment from coal exploitation.

Chinese authorities have announced the arrest of two Han Chinese for homicide, but that's failed to stem the anger.

Ethnic Mongolian herders have complained that their traditional grazing lands have been ruined by mining and desertification, and that authorities have tried to force them to settle in permanent houses.
