The recent election in the city-state of Bremen was a debacle for the CDU. With 20 percent of the vote it came in third behind the Greens. The result was typical of a current trend which sees chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives doing poorly among voters in large cities. With Berlin's local elections coming up in less than four months, the CDU is desperate to reestablish itself as a major party on a municipal and regional level.
