Members of the Association of South East Asian Nations are gathering in Jakarta for a two-day summit starting tomorrow. Among the hot topics: the deadly border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia.

Security is tight around the convention center in Jakarta on Friday as delegates from the Association of South East Asian Nations--or ASEAN--gather for their annual meeting.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Indonesia's Foreign Minister met with his Cambodian counterpart to talk about security on the Thai-Cambodian border.

[Marty Natalegawa, Indonesian Foreign Minister]:
"On top of the ASEAN related subject matters, His Excellency was kind enough and I also took the initiative of sharing with him where we are in ASEAN chair's effort to facilitate the talks between Cambodia and Thailand on this border issues. Cambodia has formerly accepted the terms of reference of the Indonesian observer team."

Fighting between the Thai and Cambodian armies seems to have eased after 12 days of artillery and gunfire--a conflict that's killed 18 people on both sides.

Cambodia's foreign minister says they want to see Indonesian observers at the Thai-Cambodia border as soon as possible.

[Hor Namhong, Cambodian Foreign Minister]:
"We also exchange view on how to deploy the Indonesian observers as soon as possible at the border and I hope that after now that minister Marty will meet with the Thailand foreign minister, there could be arranged the deployment as soon as possible of the Indonesian observers."

Cambodia-Thai relations are expected to be a hot topic at the two-day ASEAN leader's summit.

Indonesia is the 2011 chair for ASEAN. Members include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
