Yemeni Opposition Endorses Gulf Initiative, Protesters Are Skeptical

The situation in Yemen remains extremely tense, despite the main opposition coalition provisionally endorsing a mediation initiative. The plan calls for President Saleh to stand down in just over a month, frustrating protestors who are no longer prepared to negotiate with the regime.

The main opposition coalition in Yemen has conditionally endorsed a Gulf Arab initiative for President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down.

The initiative requires Saleh to stand down within a month of an agreement being signed with the opposition.

However, Yemeni protesters remain concerned that Saleh's inner circle could frustrate such an agreement.

The opposition coalition, or JMP, are negotiating with Gulf and U.S. mediators over their role in a transition government.

[Sultan Al Atwanim, Yemeni Opposition Leader]:
"We welcome the Gulf plan. However, we had a number of issues we raised about the draft agreement, which was submitted by the Secretary General of the Gulf Co-operation Council.”

But the youths and activists who provided the momentum for the anti-Saleh protests are not convinced.

They worry the ruling party and the opposition, which served in parliament before the protests, will place their own political gains ahead of the wishes of the demonstrators demanding democratic change.

"We totally refuse any initiative that doesn't include the departure of the President and his family and the trial of the President and his family. We affirm that the JMP (opposition) represents only themselves and does not represent the youth. We say that this regime is lying and does not fulfil its promises.
