Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard is on a trip to Japan and met with Japanese Foreign Minister Takeaki Matsumoto on Thursday.
Gillard arrived in Tokyo on Wednesday on the first leg of her East Asia tour. In a speech, she pledged that Australia would help Japan maintain energy security.
Japan is keen to secure additional energy sources, especially liquefied natural gas to compensate for reduced power due to the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
Analysts say Japan's long-term energy demand will further drive Australia's current massive $200 billion liquefied natural gas capacity build up.
Gillard also met with Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan later on Thursday. She is scheduled to visit disaster-hit northern Japan on Saturday.
