Voting Begins in India's West Bengal State

Assembly elections in India's state of West Bengal are now underway. It's the first of six phases of voting, which will be completed on May 10th.

The first phase of assembly elections for 54 constituencies got underway in India's state of West Bengal on Monday.

Voters arrived early at polling stations in Siliguri City with security already on hand.

A local voter expressed his happiness with the election arrangements after casting his ballot.

[Bhaskar Majumdar, Voter]:
"The preparation of elections this year has been very good especially for the public, as the campaigns did not cause much disturbance."

West Bengal state has assembly elections in six phases.All six phases of voting wrap up on May 10.

The Left Front has been in power in West Bengal for more than three decades.

This year the main opposition has stepped up pressure by raising simmering issues such as the Maoist insurgency, corruption, and unemployment.

Analysts believe the outcome of the polls in West Bengal will be crucial for national politics.
