In a rare move between the hostile neighbors, North and South Korean civil experts came together to discuss potential volcanic eruption at Mount Paektu, which is situated at the border of North Korea and China. Concerns have been rising that there could be an eruption in the near future.

On Tuesday, three North Korean volcano experts met with four South Korean geologists in the southern border city of Paju. On the agenda... the possible threat of a volcanic eruption.

[Yoon Young-geun, North Korean Volcano Research Institute]:
"After Japan's earthquake, our underground water in an observation hole was splashing up to 60 centimeters and spring water got muddy. We found many such things."

The meeting between civilian experts were organized after North Korea called for official talks about the volcano.

[Professor Yoo In-chang, South Korean Team Lead]:
"Our people have a keen interest in Mount Paektu's volcano and are concerned about it. I hope this meeting would put the issue in order."

South Korean scientists were divided over the potential volcanic eruption - some say there could happen in 2014 or 2015, while others say there will not be a volcanic eruption in the near future.

The highest peak is cone-shaped and has a crater lake at its snow-covered summit.

Seoul's Yonhap News agency said the 9,000 feet mountain last erupted in 1903. Some experts have recently warned that it may still have an active core, citing topographical signs and satellite images.

Some South Korean experts argue that North Korea's nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009 have also stimulated the core of the mountain.

Mount Paektu, the highest mountain on the Korean peninsula, is considered sacred to all Koreans. Native mythology describes it as the mountain where the first Korean kingdom was established.
