Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Shirin Ebadi, a human rights lawyer from Iran, spoke at a German Conference against Censorship last weekend.

The conferences motto was "No tolerance for the new censors -- for free access to information".

The International Society for Human Rights, ISHR, holds its yearly general conference in Bonn, Germany.

This year the conference motto "No tolerance for the new censors -- for free access to information", featured speakers highlighting the close relationship between censorship and human rights.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Shirin Ebadi spoke about women's rights, religious suppression and the Iranian internet police.

[Dr. Shirin Ebadi, Iranian Nobel Peace Prize Winner]:
"At the moment many Iranian journalists and web loggers are in prison, so Iran has become the biggest prison for these journalists and web loggers."

Dr. Ebadi says the international society should have more compassion and solidarity for Iranian people.

[Dr. Shirin Ebadi, Iranian Nobel Peace Prize Winner]:
"The Iranian people wish for democracy and human rights and try to make this known openly. But they are confronted with a day-to-day increase of acts of violence from the regime."

The internet is banned outright in Cuba while Iran and China control information using technology and an army of internet police.

The president of the ISHR says the challenge is now to provide information over the internet to where it's needed.

[Alexander Frhr. von Bischoffshausen, President ISHR]:
"This gives human rights organizations worldwide, especially the ISHR, quite a challenge. We need young people, we need specialists who deal with these issues."

The director of the "Association for Asian Research" says there are ways to break through the blockade.
