Take a tour of The Black Gate of Trier in Germany – part of the World’s Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats.

A capacious Roman style city gate stands on the German soil in Trier.

This is Porta Nigra, which in English means 'black gate', and is popularly called 'Porta' by the locals.

Built towards the end of the 2nd century, it got its current name due to the blackened color its building stone took on.

Having been converted into a church in the 11th century, it was Napoleon Bonaparte who commanded its restoration to original form.

The architectural style of the building is mainly Roman but a few Romanesque additions were made later on.

A visit to this grand and primeval monument will take you back in time to the ancient civilization.
