A devastating fire in a slum in Mumbai has destroyed the homes of thousands of people, including Rubina Ali, a child actor in the film Slumdog Millionaire.

The blaze started near Bandra Railway Station and swept through Garib Nagar, which is home to some 10,000 people. Reports say no one died.

Ali continued to live in a one room shanty with her family despite her international fame for her role in the Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire. Many of her family's possessions were destroyed in the fire, including photographs taken during Rubina's trip to the 2009 Oscar ceremony.

Speaking of the loss, she said: "Here such incidents have happened before. A building nearby was gutted sometime back. Now the same has happened here. It is sad. Sometimes, our houses are demolished. At times fire destroys everything. I feel very sad about it."

After her part in Slumdog, director Danny Boyle promised her and her co-star Azharuddin houses in Mumbai. Azharuddin moved into his new home in 2009 and now Ali is set to move into an apartment in Bandra, one of Mumbai's most expensive suburbs and home to many Bollywood stars.
