Thousands of residents from Gurgaon, India held a protest against the demolition of their houses. The homes were built in a prohibited area near a military base.

Several residents of Gurgaon, a satellite city of New Delhi, took to the streets on Monday, protesting the demolition of their houses. The homes were constructed ignoring the Indian Air Force Act and Defense Property Rules.

More than 12,000 property owners blocked traffic movement on the Gurgaon Expressway as well as roads inside the city.

The local government recently announced the houses would be demolished because they are located in a prohibited area belonging to the Indian Air Force.

One protester says the state government itself first violated the prohibited area while setting up an automobile company.

[Anirudh Singh, Protestor]:
"First the government established Haryana Urban Development Authority sectors 14 and 17 and then Maruti Company. Now when a farmer is developing his own land then they have a problem. The 900 meter IAF-restricted land was first violated when the Maruti was set up here in 1981."

The Indian Air Force Act and Defense Property Rules say no construction is allowed within 1,000 yards from the boundary of an ammunition depot.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court had pulled up the local government for blindly allowing structures to come up in the prohibited area.
