Reports from Cairo and Tahrir Square have dominated the news recently. But the fact that journalists would become targets of attack was not expected. Our correspondents in Sweden report on one such incident.

An angry mob attacked Swedish Television (SVT) correspondent Bert Sundström as he was leaving his hotel in Cairo last weekend.

[...]

Sundstrom was seriously injured with head injuries and a lung punctured from a knife stabbing to his back.

[Olov Carlsson, Executive Director, SVT]:
"Right now he is recovering from his wounds - he is heavily sedated but as the circumstances are, he is well for the time being and secure in the hospital."

The identity of the mob remains unknown, but they are suspected of being Mubarak supporters.

Reporters Without Borders says that hundreds of journalists have fallen victim to the violence in Cairo.

There have been beatings, detention, threats and even a case of death.

Ulf Löfqvist, Chief Secretary of Reporter without Borders in Sweden, says that media have started to recall their journalists from Cairo as a precautionary measure.

[Ulf Löfqvist, Chief Secretary, Reporter without Borders, Sweden]:
"We have already seen that many media organizations have started to bring home their journalists and there is a risk that if many journalists leave Egypt we will not get information about the situation there."

According to research by the Committee to Protect Journalists, (CPJ), Egyptian media say that foreign media have a hidden agenda against the government.

[Olov Carlsson, Executive Director, SVT]:
"They have been pinpointing journalists out to attack other journalists in order, to make us not report about the condition, that is not the way we used to it, we have never experienced this before on this massive scale."

Hopefully, depending on his condition, Bert Sundström can soon return home to Sweden.
