A roadside bomb in the southernmost province of Thailand has killed nine civilians and injured two. The region is often targeted by Malay militants who are fighting for a separate state in the region.

A roadside bomb kills nine civilians and wounds two in Thailand's southern Yala Province on Tuesday. It is the deadliest attack in 19 months in the predominantly Muslim region bordering Malaysia.

The victims were all Buddhists who were traveling in a pickup truck when the bomb exploded.

Police say the bomb was planted in the road and detonated remotely by a cell phone, destroying the truck.

The violence is believed to be the work of ethnic Malay militants, although no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Four soldiers were killed and five wounded last Wednesday when rebels armed with grenades and assault rifles stormed an army outpost in Narathiwat Province.

Roadside blasts are common in the region, but military and police patrols are usually the targets.

More than 4,300 people have been killed since 2004, as ethnic Malay Muslims fight for autonomy from Thailand's Buddhist majority in the rubber-rich region.
