Floodwater that form a massive inland sea creep across the northwest of Australia's Victoria state, threatening homes and properties. People are forced to evacuate one town after another and now the confluence of three rivers in the town of Swan Hill has everyone worried as the flood waters advance on their town.

Severe flooding in the northwest part of the Australian state of Victoria is threatening homes and properties, as a massive inland sea continues to move across the state on Tuesday.

Local residents have come up with their own name for the body of water that's nearly 60 miles long and 25 miles wide.

[Lindsay Shultz, Flood Warden]:
"As I said, I call it the black snake. You just don't know whether it's going to turn and bite you on the arse."

The Australian navy has provided two Black Hawk helicopters to take aerial photographs to chart the flow of the floodwater.

Meanwhile locals are trying to channel the water to an area where it will cause less damage.

The water has already reached some houses outside the town of Swan Hill with a population of 10,000.

The town is next in line for the mass of moving water and most residents have sandbagged their homes.

The three rivers that join at the town, the Murray River, the Avoca and the Loddon Rivers, are expected to peak in the coming days.

Recent flooding in Victoria has affected nearly 1,800 properties and 75 towns, according to the State Emergency Services.

The record floods in Australia, blamed on La Nina wet weather patterns, have killed 35 people and affected dozens of towns and cities in the states of Victoria and Queensland.
