Flooding continues in Sri Lanka as the death toll climbs to 32. Heavy monsoon rains have pounded the country since the start of the new year.

Heavy monsoon rains and flooding across a third of Sri Lanka have killed 32 people and forced hundreds of thousands to leave their homes over the weekend.

[Mohhamed Nafeer, Flood Victim]:
"It rained very hard and floodwater came and destroyed our house. All our belongings went in the water. We went to the mosque to take shelter. The water level reached above our heads and we lost all the chickens we had."

At least 325-thousand people have been forced from their homes by the floods.

Another 49 have been injured and 12 were missing.

About a fifth of Sri Lanka's staple rice crop has been destroyed, raising concerns over supply and higher food inflation.

The government estimates $500 million in damages caused by flooding.

Greater-than-normal monsoon rains since early January have pounded Sri Lanka's northern, eastern, central and north-central provinces.

The rains set off mudslides, swamping roads and bursting hundreds of dams and reservoirs.
