U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates arrived in Seoul on Friday as part of his Asian tour. He met with South Korea's Defense Minister to discuss the U.S.-South Korea military alliance and tensions on the Korean peninsula.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates met South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin on Friday in Seoul. Topping their agenda... the U.S.-South Korea military alliance and North Korean matters.

[Robert Gates, U.S. Defense Secretary]:
"In our meeting, I expect to discuss ROK (Republic of Korea)-U.S. military coordination and consultation in order to deter (North Korea's) future provocations."

Gates says it is possible that six-party talks with North Korea could resume.

[Robert Gates, U.S. Defense Secretary]:
"When or if North Korea's action shall cause to believe that negotiations can be productive and conducted in good faith, then we can see a return to six party talks."

Gates arrived in Seoul on Friday on the third leg of his North Asian tour after Beijing and Tokyo.

Before the meeting, a small group of anti-war activists staged a rally in front of the defense ministry against military alliance between Washington, Tokyo and Seoul.

"America should not put more military pressure on North Korea. Each side can try to attain its objectives through dialogue and negotiation."

After the talks, Gates paid a courtesy call on South Korean President Lee Myung-bak.
