The italian molossus. there are 2 names commonly used for mastino, "cane corso" and "can'e presa". scanziani want to call him "molosso romano" or "molosso italiano", but then, i think for some external influences (ie: camorra, there is a famous description made by professor tecce, before 1900: "Quando questo glielo ordina, attacca con ferocia insuperabile;assale, atterra, sbrana; tutto è compiuto in un batter d’occhio. A Napoli è il compagno inseparabile del camorrista, al quale accresce la fierezza nella spoliazione dell’innocente.". i think that say "in neaples", means that the mastino was not in neaples only, don't you?), the name "mastino napoletano" was chosen. there was a new name, unused and created just for the new born race, but the neapolitan mastinari still call him "can 'e presa". some years ago, in 1996, another molosso was found in apulia. it had much less skin, just a little under dewlap, was finest and lighter, and a lot of other differences, expecially the nature, the characterial disposition. some persons thought to take these dogs and ask for an official acknowledgment as a new italian official race. it was the "light" italian molossus, not the mastino napoletano, the one described by colummella 2000 years ago, but was similar to hunting dogs sculptures found in reggia di caserta's. it was multifunctional, it was different from mastino, so it can be acknowledged by enci, and for this dog, the name of "cane corso" was choosed.
