Nearly 80 ice skaters from India and some foreign countries are taking part in the All India Ice-Skating cahmpionship in Shimla. The city has the largest semi-natural ice skating rink in India.
The seventh All India National Open Ice-Skating Championship began in Shimla City on Monday.
More than 80 skaters from 12 different Indian states and foreign teams are taking part in the championship.
[Bhavnesh Banga, Organizer]:
“This championship holds a special position as it gives exposure to our skaters. For this championship participants have come from America, Muscat and Abu Dhabi. Seeing the skating standards of the foreign participants, our young and budding skaters would learn to improve their standards as well.”
[Amy, Skater from United States]:
“In India it is so pretty here because of these mountains and this all… I mean this is not completely natural but it is close to it and it is a good experience to skate on it. There is nothing like this in USA exactly.”
The skating season in Shimla usually begins in December and ends in February.
Shimla has the largest semi-natural ice-skating rink in India, and is also a hill resort city.
The championship wraps up on Wednesday.
