A former Chinese Communist Party chief who was responsible for investigating corruption was executed on Thursday. Zeng Jinchun was found guilty of taking more than 31 million yuan, or $4.7-million U.S. dollars, in bribes.

State media reported Zeng, the former secretary for the Chenzhou Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection, awarded mine contracts and job promotions in exchange for bribes from 1997 to 2006.

Zeng was found guilty by the Intermediate People's Court of Changsha City in November 2008 and higher courts rejected his appeals.
